Late Summer is here and early fall is approaching.  You know what that means!  Diving in Palm Beach means diving with giants.  This season, get to know Goliath Groupers.  Sign up for a dive that’s all about Goliath education.

Every year, the Goliath Grouper aggregation happens along the coast of the Palm Beaches.  South Florida is the only place in the world where this occurs.  They flock to local wrecks and reefs.  Divers witness huge congregations of Goliaths.  At the right time, it’s even possible to observe an active spawning event.

Snag a front-row seat to the show!  Become part of the behind-the-scenes conservation effort.  Right now, these colossal creatures face a formidable threat.  Their population is at risk.  They need voices to advocate for their protection.

The first step to protecting Goliath Grouper is raising awareness.  It’s important to learn as much as we can about these gentle giants.  Dive with us alongside a Goliath Grouper researcher as you learn more about these amazing fish.

Have you seen Goliath Groupers underwater?  It’s unforgettable.  Their sheer size can make any diver go slack-jaw.  Their thunderous barks rattle bones.  And their languid nature makes for incredible close encounters.

Get to know Goliath Groupers on a deeper level.  Sign up for an educational dive charter.  Learn from Goliath Grouper researchers onboard.  The first charter was Sunday morning, September 19th.  Our divers had an awesome time and learned so much about Goliaths!  The next charter will be Sunday afternoon, October 17th.  Sign up now to secure your spot.

GET TO KNOW GOLIATH GROUPERS

First, dive alongside researchers as they film Goliaths.  Observe these giant fish in their natural environment.

Then, absorb information during the surface interval.  Learn about Goliath Grouper biology.  Listen to some exciting ongoing studies.  Learn how GoPro footage is used to aid research.  Find out how citizen science data helps to understand population trends.

Finally, discuss hypotheses.  Why do data show a decline in Goliath populations?  Understand current threats to Goliaths.  Stay up-to-date on the discussion.

GET TO KNOW CURRENT THREATS

Enter stage: the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC).  They have a decision to make.  There’s a proposal to reopen a Goliath fishery.  Learn why this is a bad idea.

In the past, Goliath Groupers were overfished.  They were on the brink of extinction.  In 1990, fishing Goliaths became prohibited.  Luckily, their population has started to recover.

Now their fate hangs in the balance.  Reopening a harvest poses a threat to their population.  They’re a critically endangered species.  Learn why they’re more valuable alive.  Listen to the current research.  Make your voice heard.  Take action to stop the Goliath Grouper fishery.
