February is the month of love, and we love Florida sharks! Their fluid movements through the water captivate new and experienced divers alike. But sharks are more than just beautiful creatures for us to observe. They also play a key role in the marine ecosystem.

Sharks are vital to preserving a healthy reef and a thriving ocean. And the biggest threat to sharks? Humans.

Learn from Hannah Medd, founder of the American Shark Conservancy. The American Shark Conservancy is the nexus for local shark conservation ecology. Their research focuses on understanding how human activities may be affecting these important and vulnerable species along the Florida coast.

Enjoy fin-tastic treats, beer, and wine during this in-person event. Bring a potluck style dish to share, if you’d like!

DIVE WITH A SHARK SCIENTIST

Then, splash in with Hannah to Dive with a Shark Scientist! Join her the morning after the social for a 2-Tank Dive Charter on deep (70′ – 90′)  reefs and wrecks. Drift over some of our most sharky dive sites to spot species local to South Florida. Ask Hannah your most pressing shark questions, and learn firsthand about her research.

Divers must be Advanced Open Water and Enriched Air Nitrox certified to join a deep dive charter. Please note that shark dives are not baited. We practice passive observation of sharks in the wild.

MEET HANNAH MEDD

Hannah Medd founded the American Shark Conservancy in 2014.  Her non-profit organization is dedicated to shark and ray conservation and facilitating sustainable management solutions by connecting natural sciences, people, and policy.

Hannah’s shark research has taken her all over the world, including tagging Great White Sharks in South Africa, and tagging and tracking large coastal sharks off of Florida.

Tagging sharks, drawing blood, monitoring behavior, and photographing various shark species are just some of the day to day tasks involved in her work.

Join her for a dive to learn about it firsthand!
