Why Vertical Oyster Gardens?
Oysters are powerhouse ecosystem engineers. A single adult oyster can filter up to 50 gallons of water per day. They remove excess sediments and pollutants to improve clarity and health in our waterways
Vertical Oyster Gardens (VOGs) use recycled shells sourced from local restaurants. This keeps shells out of landfills and gives them a second life
Get Hands-On
Learn how oyster reefs sustain coastal health as we get our hands dirty assembling vertical oyster gardens. Drilled, recycled oyster shells and craft supplies will be provided.
While we craft, Tom Twyford, President of the PBC Fishing Foundation, will teach us how the program came into existence, and share oyster restoration success stories.
Plus, learn about the Foundation’s Reef Darts program, an innovative reef building effort using repurposed concrete utility poles and culverts that might otherwise end up in area land fills.
Dock Owners Wanted!
Do you own or rent a dock along a brackish canal or waterway
You can sign up to become a designated VOG gardener, hang gardens beneath your dock (no state permits required!), and help monitor local growth
Reserve Your Spot
Because this is an intimate, hands-on workshop, space is strictly capped at 30 participants. Spots fill quickly, so advance registration is required to participate. Save your spot below!
