Shark populations across the globe have been in decline for decades. Overfishing, shark bycatch, habitat loss, and the demand for shark fins and meat made a noticeable difference in their numbers.

Sharks are apex predators who play an important role in the health of offshore ecosystems. Even a small change to shark populations can have dramatic effects on the marine food web.

Conservation efforts are essential to protect sharks and bring balance back to the ocean. Learn how recent advances in shark bycatch reduction are helping make fisheries sustainable again.

Dr. Stephen Kajiura, of FAU’s Shark Lab, will share how global changes, like the establishment of marine protected areas and international agreements like CITES listings, play an essential role safeguarding remaining shark populations. By protecting sharks and reducing shark bycatch, we can help ensure a healthier ocean for future generations.

Enjoy fin-tastic treats, beer, and wine during this in-person event. The next day, go diving alongside Dr. Kajiura to dive with sharks in the wild
