On
Sunday, November 16th, SS Minnow Charters, Pura Vida Divers,
and Project AWARE sponsored the Phil Foster Park Project
AWARE Clean Up. With more than 40 participants including
volunteers and organizers, over 300 pounds of trash were
removed.
Covered
by CBS and NBC news crews, the Phil Foster Park Project
AWARE Clean Up was certainly a success. Participants of
all ages recovered everything from beach chairs to carpet
to goodie bags full of of bottles, bottle caps, and cigarette
butts. Fortunately, no blennies were harmed during this
event.

Prizes
included diving and snorkeling equipment, t-shirts, and
dive charters. All participants received a prize as well
as a t-shirt for there conservation efforts.
In
their inaugural event, LagoonKeepers.org, a non-profit
organization dedicated to the conservation of the Lake
Worth Lagoon, provided additional support and sponsorship
including clean up materials and t-shirts for all participants.
Food
and beverages were provided by The Hungry Shark, a pizza
establishment on Singer Island, while Pete's Banners provided
banners and signs.
With
a force of scuba divers, snorkelers, and beachcombers,
the underwater and beach clean up efforts focused on the
Southwest section of Phil Foster Park. This area, under
the Blue Heron Bridge and near the fishing pier, typically
offers divers and snorkelers protected access to the Intercoastal
Waterway and the incredible marine life that inhabits
this extraordinary dive site.
Year-round,
Phil Foster Park offers divers an excellent environment
for training dives including Open Water, Advanced Open
Water, and Rescue Diver.
If
you missed this event, you will have another opportunity
to participate at the Phil Foster Park Project AWARE Clean
Up scheduled in April 2004 around Earth Day.
